FAQ

Common questions.

Yes, completely free. No subscription, no premium tier, no watermarks.
Browser extensions can't process video files directly — they're sandboxed for security. The helper app (which runs locally on your machine) handles the actual video downloading and trimming using yt-dlp and ffmpeg. Your video data never leaves your computer.
Yes. The helper is open source and runs a simple local server on port 9999 that only accepts connections from your browser. It doesn't connect to any external servers. Windows SmartScreen may warn you because the app isn't code-signed yet — click "More info" then "Run anyway" to proceed.
You can choose from 360p, 480p, 720p, 1080p, 1440p (2K), and 2160p (4K). Higher quality downloads take longer since the full video is downloaded before trimming — a 4K clip may take a minute or two depending on your internet speed.
The Chrome extension works on Mac, but the helper app is currently Windows-only. Mac support is in development.
It depends on your jurisdiction and what you do with the downloaded content. Downloading for personal use is generally accepted in many countries. You are responsible for ensuring you have the right to download any content you clip. SimplyClip should not be used to infringe on copyright.
